What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, or product, whether acquired commercially, off the shelf, modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capacities of individuals with disabilities. Assistive Technology has the powerful potential of impacting significantly upon a student with disabilities by contributing to his or her learning, independence, self-esteem, and quality of life.

Examples of Assistive Technology:
alternative keyboard, word prediction, word wall, voice output device, adapted toys, talking calculator, walkers, large print books

Mission Statement
The mission of the Louisiana Assistive Technology Initiative is to develop and enhance local expertise in assistive technology so that students with disabilities have access to the devices and services required for classroom participation and academic achievement.

Goals
1. Provide on-going training and services to parents, teachers, students, and ancillary personnel.
2. Enhance awareness of AT and services offered by this initiative.
3. Collaborate with community organizations regarding AT.
